‘WATCH ME RUN’

Two silly thieves see a man with a leather bag full of money. They try to grab the bag, but it leads to a crazy chase. Along the way, they make funny mistakes and cause a lot of silly accidents. Genre: Comedy/ Crime/ Entertainment
I want to create a 3D animation with a 2D look, inspired by American comic styles. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is my favorite example. My story is set in downtown Brooklyn, New York. The style shown on the left image is exactly the look I want to achieve.

Technical experiment

Semester progress-character

In the past few weeks, I made three versions of the characters and finally picked one I liked. The first version was the original, but it had too many details and looked unattractive. The second version had the biggest changes—I fixed the clothes and designed a better face. The third version improved the second one because Mr. Tall and Mr. Strong's bodies looked too similar. I reworked their bodies, but Mr. Tall's new body didn't match well with the other two characters. So, I went back to using Mr. Tall's second version.

Semester progress-environment

After finishing the characters, I started redesigning the environment. My environment is a whole city, and this screenshot shows the progress of the main street. At first, the scene was designed as a small neighborhood without tall buildings, but I wasn’t satisfied with it. So, I created a second version, which looked more lively and more NY. The third version improved on the second by adding more details and change some buildings. The textures are still not complete, and I plan to finish a fourth version by next week.
<PS: I did a lot of unnecessary work on the environment, like adding and changing many buildings, cars, and roadside objects repeatedly. In the end, most of these were deleted because they didn’t match the style. The most important parts-- layout and colors, weren’t improved at all, which was a big mistake. Fixing the envirment will be my main focus for next week’s assignment.>

Color palette template

I will use the color palette from the left image for the overall tone. When the story reaches its climax, I will switch to the color palette from the right image.

Animatic

On the left is painting effects directly on the 3D render, and on the right is painting effects on the texture. I chose the second style.
The Grid scene was changed two times. I fixed the camera angles and character layout and tested the rendering time.
